Water & Wastewater Pump Impeller Refurbishment Restores Performance and Reliability
Problem
The 18″ sewage pump impeller arrived at Jim House & Associates with significant wear in the wear ring area, creating dimensional loss and compromising the component’s ability to maintain proper operating clearances.
To return the impeller to reliable service, the worn wear ring surface required restoration and a new wear ring installation. The challenge was compounded by machining constraints that required adapting traditional machining methods in a non-traditional way to achieve the required tolerances and geometry.
Without repair, the worn condition could have resulted in reduced hydraulic efficiency, increased recirculation, accelerated wear, and shortened equipment life.
The Solution
Jim House & Associate’s pump service shop developed and executed a custom refurbishment process to restore the impeller’s critical dimensions and operating integrity.
Step 1: Removal and Preparation
The existing wear ring was precision machined off the impeller. Once removed, the impeller was carefully prepared for rebuild, ensuring a clean and accurate foundation for the restoration process.
Step 2: Custom Sleeve Fabrication
To restore the worn surface, a new sleeve was fabricated from 1/2-inch rolled flat bar. The sleeve was then thermally expanded and installed with a precise .010″ interference fit.
This process re-established the required dimensions while providing a robust foundation for the new wear surface.
Step 3: Wear Ring Installation
Following sleeve installation, a new wear ring was installed using a controlled .002″ shrink fit.
This approach ensured:
